This project, jointly designed by Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency Theatre and Performing Arts Directorate and Istanbul University Department of Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy, involves field studies on the past and present theatre halls and stages of Istanbul to compile an inclusive theatre map of the city. The outcome of the research will be published. There are countless spots to be marked on this theatre map – including the past and present of the city–: Beyoglu and its environs, Şişli, Ortaköy, Dolmabahçe, Şehzadebaşı - Direklerarası districts on the European side, mainly Kadiköy and Üsküdar districts on the Asian side. Unfortunately, the theatre buildings of the city are being torn down. Vanishing of the theatre halls is affecting the theatre life of the metropolis quite negatively. With “The Tradition that Opens Curtain to the Future” project, it is planned to support the existing theatres. The book to be published will be named after the project title. It will be presented to theatre-lovers by May 2010.
