Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality City Theatres, one of the oldest institutions of Istanbul’s theatre life, is celebrating Istanbul’s selection as a Capital of Culture with Istanbul-themed plays in its 2010 – 2011 season. “Istanbul Efendisi” (An Istanbul Gentleman), “Kendi Gök Kubbemiz” (Our Own Empyrean) and “Meraklisi için Öyle bir Hikaye” (Just a Simple Story) are being staged in the scope of “Istanbul Repertoire”, a set of games plays reflecting the stages Istanbul has been through during the course of history. Moreover, Özen Yula’s “Dünyanin Ortasinda Bir Yer” (A Place in the Middle of the Earth) will be presented to the audience in Russian, English, Arabic, Bosnian and Turkish. “fiehirler Kraliçesi” (Queen of Cities) is another play to be staged in the scope of “Istanbul Repertoire”, written by IMCT Drama Department. In a fairytale atmosphere, the play relates various periods Istanbul has been through, starting from the time of Zeus and Io, (after whom Bosphorus was named), until the invasion days. Istanbul Repertoire also includes, “Düflüfl” (The Fall) adopted by Kemal Bekir, based on Nahid Sirri Örik’s novel. The play touches the turning points of the history of our country and Istanbul in the early 20th century. “Sodom ve Gomore” (Sodom and Gomorrah) adopted from the novel of Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoglu will be offering a striking story on the invaded Istanbul. Including Murathan Mungan’s “Son Istanbul” (Last Istanbul), there are many other plays – currently being rehearsed – which will tell stories on today’s Istanbul. The plays of “Istanbul Repertoire” will not only be staged by City Theatres. Alternative stages to reflect the historical and urban characteristics of the city are taken into account, while designing the plays. The play based on Halit Ziya Uflakligil’s “Aflk-i Memnu” (Forbidden Love) will be staged in the 110th year of the novel. The play based on Sait Faik’s “Bir Marti Havalandi Burgaz’dan” (A Seagull Flew from Burgaz) will be staged interactively in an old waterside residence. During the play, the audience will be sailing from Istanbul to Burgazada. In his play titled “Istanbul fiahitleri” (Eyewitnesses of Istanbul) he wrote for City Theatres, Sunay Akin, will tell the story of a great love, the hopeless love of Galata and Maiden’s Towers, two lovers of Istanbul’s, who can never get together. With the new plays and special projects it will stage in the new season, I.M.M. City Theatres will contribute to the activities of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture program.
